Expect the Unexpected

When an unexpected encounter changes your live’s trajectory.

There are encounters we remember because of what happened in the moment.

And there are encounters we remember because they changed everything that happened afterward.

A person enters our life unexpectedly. A conversation introduces an idea we had never considered. An invitation places us somewhere we had no particular reason to be. Two independent trajectories cross, and the direction of one or both is altered.

At the time, the significance may be imperceptible.

Years later, we can trace an entire sequence of events back to that single point of contact.

We call it coincidence, timing, or even luck.

There is another word for the unexpected discovery of something valuable:

Serendipity.

The Possibility of Collision

I recently encountered an idea sometimes described as the law of collision: the more we expose ourselves to people, places, ideas and experiences, the greater the probability that meaningful intersections will occur.

The premise is beautifully simple.

We cannot encounter what we continually remain removed from.

If we want new ideas, we must venture beyond familiar thinking. If we want meaningful relationships, we must enter spaces where relationships can form. If we want opportunity, we must become visible enough to encounter it.

Movement increases the possibility of collision.

Sociologist Mark Granovetter's influential work on the Strength of Weak Ties offers an interesting foundation for this idea. Connections further than our closest circles can introduce us to information, perspectives and opportunities that may never reach us through the people we already know well.

This social capital increases our proximity to possibility.

Every time we extend ourselves beyond the familiar, we enlarge the territory in which discovery can occur.

Serendipity Is Not Entirely Accidental

Researcher and author Christian Busch has examined serendipity as more than fortunate happenstance. His work explores our capacity to recognize unexpected connections and transform them into meaningful outcomes.

That distinction fascinates me.

We cannot orchestrate the encounter, however, we can influence what happens after it.

Someone makes an unexpected comment. Do we inquire further?

We are introduced to someone outside our usual sphere. Do we become curious?

An opportunity appears in an unfamiliar form. Do we dismiss it because it wasn't what we were looking for?

Serendipity may begin with chance, but its consequence often depends upon recognition.

Something catches our attention, resonates and makes us stay in the conversation a little longer.

A collision that could have passed unnoticed begins to acquire consequence.

Two Trajectories Meet

Think about a Newton's cradle.

One silver sphere moves toward the others.

Contact occurs.

Energy transfers.

And suddenly there is movement somewhere else.

Human collisions can work much the same way.

Someone says something that activates an idea.

An introduction creates access to an entirely different world.

A mentor recognizes an ability we have underestimated.

A stranger offers a sentence we carry for years.

A new relationship introduces us to people, places and possibilities that were completely absent from our previous landscape.

The original encounter may last five minutes. Its reverberation may last decades.

That is what makes certain collisions so extraordinary.

Their magnitude cannot be measured by their duration.

Personal Note:

Throughout my life, I have been fortunate to learn from several mentors, both in my work and in my personal relationships. Each has offered something meaningful: wisdom at a crossroads, encouragement as I pursued an idea, or a perspective I came to understand more fully with time.

I am beyond grateful for the many ways their guidance has become part of how I live, work and serve.

Mentorship can begin so naturally. We find ourselves listening closely to someone, appreciating how they approach a situation, or feeling comfortable enough to ask for guidance. Over time, their example becomes a trusted reference in our own lives.

The Path of Alignment

There is a difference between forcing an outcome and placing ourselves where discovery can occur.

Force attempts to prescribe the destination.

Movement expands the terrain.

It places us in proximity to new thinking.

New relationships.

Unfamiliar perspectives.

Different environments.

Unexpected conversations.

And occasionally, something remarkable happens.

The people, ideas and opportunities we encounter begin to correspond with the direction in which we are already moving.

The path feels less resistant, Because it has become coherent.

What we value, what we are pursuing and what we are encountering begin to converge.

This may be one of the most compelling dimensions of serendipity.

We experience the encounter as unexpected while simultaneously sensing that it somehow belongs.

Collision to Synergy

A synergistic collision can create something that did not exist before.

One person carries an idea.

Another carries experience.

Someone else has access.

Another brings perspective.

One recognizes the possibility.

Another knows how to give it form.

Each arrives carrying something complete in its own right.

Then they meet.

And through the meeting, a new possibility emerges.

This is where serendipity becomes more than a fortunate encounter.

It becomes generative.

The collision does not simply add something to our lives.

It multiplies what can come from them.

Your Collision Story

The most consequential collisions in our lives are rarely recognizable in the moment.

Only with distance do we recognize the inflection point.

As you review your own life, allow a few mentors to come to mind.

Someone who offered encouragement at a tender moment. A colleague whose example shaped your work. A friend whose wisdom helped you understand yourself more fully.

Remember how those relationships began and how they grew. Consider the qualities you admired and the guidance you still draw upon today.

Whose influence lives on through the way you encourage others?

Let their generosity inspire your next encounter. Ask the additional question. Invite someone into the conversation. Give a promising idea room to develop.

You may meet your next mentor.

You may also become one.

The Pattern of Possibility

The cover image is the pattern found throughout nature, mathematics, and the cosmos itself. Spiraling outward from a single point, each movement builds upon the one before it, creating an ever-expanding expression of possibility.

As I reflected on this image, I found myself contemplating the concept of limitless potential. Limitless is often associated with abundance, achievement, wealth, opportunity, or success.

Limitless is often defined by the opportunities available to us.

I believe it is better understood through the realization that we are never finished becoming.

From the moment we are born, we are conditioned to define ourselves.

We identify with our name, our family, our education, our profession, our successes, our failures, and the stories we tell about ourselves.

Over time, those identities become familiar. Comfortable. Predictable.

Yet nature offers a different lesson.

A seed does not spend its life becoming a better seed.

It becomes a tree.

A caterpillar does not perfect the art of being a caterpillar.

It becomes a beautiful butterfly.

We Create Beyond Boundaries

The universe itself appears to be in a constant state of expansion and emergence. Everything is evolving.

Why would we be any different?

As I shared in my blog Time, each of us is gifted a finite amount of time. No one knows how many pages remain in our book. Yet within that finite expression of time exists the extraordinary:

Growth beyond limitation.

Contribution beyond self-interest.

Becoming beyond identity.

 It is likely that the greatest limitation is the belief that we have already become who we are.

The moment we decide, "This is who I am," we begin constructing walls around our own evolution.

Those walls take many forms: the belief that our best years are behind us, the assumption that creativity belongs to others, the reluctance to step into the unknown, the fear that we are not enough, or simply the quiet surrender that comes when we no longer believe the effort will matter.

Yet life has a remarkable way of inviting us beyond the boundaries we create for ourselves.

Every challenge, relationship, disappointment, success, loss, and unexpected opportunity presents an invitation to expand into a version of ourselves we have not yet met.

The limitless nature of life is found in our willingness to evolve, to remain curious, teachable, and willing to release identities that no longer serve us.

This perspective also reshapes how we think about leadership.

Leadership is commonly defined as a title to earn, a position to attain, or a level of expertise to achieve.

Yet servant leadership invites us into a different understanding.

Leadership is an ongoing process of becoming.

The most effective leaders remain open to learning, growing, listening, and evolving. They recognize that leadership about stewardship.

At its core, servant leadership asks a simple question:

How can my growth support the growth of others?

As we expand our awareness, wisdom, capability, and emotional maturity, we increase our capacity to serve.

We begin to:

Listening more attentively.

Guiding more thoughtfully.

Connecting more authentically.

Leading more intentionally.

Serving more meaningfully.

This is where limitless potential becomes a responsibility.

The Ripple Effect of Potential

Cultivated strengths create opportunities to serve.

Lessons gathered throughout life become wisdom worth sharing.

Proof of transformation encourages others to begin their own journey.

My friend and mentor, Rosie Dolan Baker, demonstrated this principle long before I understood it.

Rosie’s belief in my potential became part of my own belief system. What Rosie nurtured in me continues to influence the people I serve today.

That is servant leadership.

The impact of one person's faith, encouragement, and guidance extending outward in ways that cannot be fully measured.

This philosophy sits at the heart of CG Excellence.

True excellence is about continual evolution.

It is about becoming the highest expression of ourselves so that we may better serve others.

We are Co-Creators of our Evolution

There is one final perspective worth considering.

The future version of you is being shaped in real time through your choices, your willingness to grow, your capacity to adapt, and your courage to step beyond what is familiar.

In this way, limitless living is participatory.

We are co-creators of our evolution.

Life itself is a gift.

Each morning, we awaken to an unwritten page. Each evening, we retire as a slightly different version of ourselves than the one who greeted the day.

Our time may be finite, yet our capacity for growth, contribution, wisdom, and impact continues to unfold for as long as we are willing to evolve.

The invitation is to recognize that there is no final version of you.

Your future is waiting to be created.

As we expand our awareness, wisdom, capability, and emotional maturity, we increase our capacity to serve.
