Trigger
A trigger can open a doorway to deeper understanding. Explore how awareness, compassion, forgiveness and thoughtful boundaries help us process our reactions and return to the work, relationships and life deserving our attention.
Decide What Earns Your Attention
A trigger is the door to a deeper understanding.
CG Excellence
An interruption can show up without warning.
You're moving through your day with real clarity. Your priorities are set, your confidence feels grounded, and you're making steady progress on work you care about. Then an unexpected encounter interrupts your rhythm.
A comment. A conversation. An image. A criticism. A breach of trust.
Another person might shrug it off, but it reaches you differently. Your focus slips, your energy shifts, and work that felt easy an hour ago suddenly takes effort.
An outside event has disturbed what you worked hard to build inside. We call that a trigger. Often, the trigger is only the beginning of the conversation.
When the Reaction Surprises Us
At times, the most unsettling part is how deeply an experience affected us.
We may have spent years building confidence, perspective, discipline, and peace. So when an experience touches an unexpectedly tender place, we ask ourselves: Why does this still get to me? Haven't I already worked through this?
Being affected and having done the work can exist side by side. Growth brings awareness of what's going on inside us when disappointment, disrespect, or hurt show up. A disturbance can show you where your inner work is being tested.
Listen to What the Trigger Reveals
A trigger can carry information. It might point to a limit that matters deeply to you, challenge a value you hold about yourself, expose an expectation you didn't know you were carrying, or show you a relationship that needs more discernment.
Get curious about the reaction. What happened? What did it awaken in me? What boundary or response makes sense here?
One question may matter most: What am I unwilling to let this take from the rest of my day?
That question hands the authority back to you.
What Difficult Encounters Can Teach Us
Some of the most difficult encounters in our lives can become unexpected teachers. Our reaction can reveal parts of ourselves that comfort never needed to expose.
A difficult interaction may show us where a boundary belongs. It may reveal what we value, what still hurts, what we have outgrown, or where we have given another person more responsibility for our internal state than they should carry.
Seen this way, the question begins to change. Alongside Why did this happen to me? we can ask: What is this experience showing me about myself?
The answer may invite forgiveness. Forgiveness of ourselves for reacting. Forgiveness of another person without excusing the behavior. Compassion for ourselves while we work through what was awakened. Compassion for another person that leaves the healing of what belongs to them in their hands.
Forgiveness and compassion both live comfortably alongside boundaries and discernment.
When we move from immediate reaction toward intentional response, we reclaim our ability to choose how the experience continues within us. What enters our day is often out of our hands, and we can grow more deliberate about directing our attention.
When We Lead Through Service
People who lead through service notice others. We recognize who feels left out, make room for different perspectives, and encourage, guide, and support.
Robert K. Greenleaf's philosophy of servant leadership placed service at the center of leadership, emphasizing the growth and well-being of the people and communities being served. His work gives language to something many service-oriented people instinctively understand: caring for others asks us to remain aware of them.
That awareness is a strength, and it grows stronger with discernment. We can care deeply about another person's development and still feel the impact when trust is broken, intentions are questioned, or consideration goes unreturned.
Service includes boundaries. Empathy allows us to understand another person's experience without taking responsibility for it. A thoughtful boundary protects our capacity to care, contribute, and continue serving with intention.
Protect What You've Cultivated
Your attention, creativity, confidence, peace, and judgment are valuable. Protecting them calls for thoughtfulness about what gets ongoing access to your inner world.
A comment can earn a moment of your thinking without earning an hour. An opinion can be heard without taking up residence in how you see yourself. A difficult interaction can end without claiming the rest of your day. A misunderstanding can stand without an explanation.
Some situations call for a conversation. Others call for a boundary or a little distance. And in some moments, you simply decide: I'm not carrying this any farther.
The Return
A trigger can feel instant. An event occurs, and the emotion follows right behind it.
Awareness opens a pause, and in that pause we can say, That hurt. That crossed a line. That touched a place I need to look at. We can feel the emotion without allowing it to decide what happens next.
Within that pause, we choose our next response.
Then we come back. To our work. To the people we love. To the ideas waiting for us. To ourselves.
Coming back honors what happened and lets us choose how much space it occupies in our future.
A Personal Note
This reflection was inspired by an experience that threw me off more than I expected. I found myself wondering how an outside event had managed to interrupt my peace.
Writing helped me see what my reaction was trying to tell me. It reminded me of the value of boundaries and discernment, and of protecting growth.
I believe meaningful lessons often arrive at unexpected moments. Why an experience hits us so hard often becomes clear later, and when we're willing to look at what it awakened, an uncomfortable moment can deepen our awareness.
Being affected does not erase the ground I've gained.
I can move through this. I can learn from it. I can honor what it showed me. I can forgive without surrendering the boundary.
And then I can return to the work, the people, the creativity and the life that deserve the best of my attention.
The trigger may arrive without my permission. What stays with me is my choice.

BEGIN
Every morning waits for you. Explore how mindfulness, gratitude and everyday choices shape the care we bring to ourselves, our work and the people we serve.
Every Morning Waits for You
Rise each morning and
embrace your big, beautiful life.
- CG Excellence
Before the messages and responsibilities arrive, there is a moment to consider how you will meet the day.
Your health. Your mindset. Your priorities. Your attention.
Our lives are finite. Each day offers hours to contribute, create, nurture, serve and appreciate the people around us.
How we spend those hours reflects the patterns guiding our choices. Some are consciously chosen; others develop through experience and repetition. They shape what we notice, how we interpret events and the way we speak to ourselves.
Our view of the world reveals something about our beliefs, expectations and sense of possibility. Paying attention to our thoughts gives us an opportunity to consider whether they support the life we want to create.
Awareness Creates Choice
Zen teacher Thich Nhat Hanh taught mindfulness as a practice woven into daily life, through our breathing, our listening and the care we bring to our words.
We can apply his teaching to our next interaction.
Before greeting a customer or answering a colleague, take one deliberate breath. Give the person your attention. Listen fully. Choose a tone and response that support understanding.
During a busy day, a brief pause gives us space to reconsider an assumption and choose a thoughtful response.
Begin your day with three words:
I get to…
Rise.
Care for my body.
Contribute.
Encourage another person.
Notice something beautiful.
These words invite us to recognize the opportunity within our responsibilities.
On the frontline, contribution takes practical forms: answering a question, preparing an order, greeting a customer, supporting a colleague or offering reassurance.
Each interaction holds the potential to strengthen trust, restore confidence or make someone’s day easier.
“I get to” brings the value of our participation into view.
The Privilege of Noticing
Our senses connect us to the texture of daily life.
Sunlight crossing a room. A familiar voice. The first sip of coffee. A bird arriving outside the window. Fresh air in your lungs during a daily walk.
Familiar experiences hold beauty worth our attention.
Pausing to appreciate them can deepen our enjoyment of the life we are living.
Attentiveness enriches what is already here.
Your Signature
Every day offers choices worthy of consideration.
How will I care for myself?
Where will I place my attention?
Whom will I encourage?
What deserves my energy?
The answers take form through our actions. Over time, they shape our work, relationships and the way people experience us.
Your service, creativity and kindness leave an impression uniquely your own.
Your signature.
Choose with care. Follow through with grace.
How will you sign off on this day?
A Personal Note
Most mornings begin for me with a cup of coffee and the birds outside my window.
The birdhouses pictured with this reflection were inspired by gifts from my brother. They remind me of the care of family and friends, and the privilege of seeing beauty in something so personal.
A cardinal arriving for breakfast, morning light across the grass and the warmth of my cup bring me into the day with gratitude. I get to be here for it.
With each morning we are given,
We get to begin again.
Rise each morning and embrace your big, beautiful life.

Remembering
Remembering explores intuition, self-awareness and the natural abilities within servant leaders and what becomes possible when those capabilities are recognized, strengthened and activated.
Seek not to be chosen.
Choose thyself.
–CG Excellence
Personal Note on Remembering
For me, remembering began as a subtle voice. With each month and each year, it grew louder until I knew it was time to pay attention.
Meditation and exploration created the space for that knowing to emerge. Ideas became words. Experience found new purpose. Abilities I had carried throughout my life began connecting in ways I had not seen before.
The expression continues to evolve as life unfolds.
As my awareness expanded, so did my sense of what was possible. I began to experience intuition, creativity and knowing as part of something vast. Insight that became available when I became still enough to listen.
There are lessons we learn.
And there is wisdom we remember.
Remembering is a knowing.
The recognition that something within us has been there all along: an instinct, an ability, a way of reading a room, a sense of direction that may not require explanation.
For the frontline servant leader, this recognition can show up mid-shift, in a difficult conversation with a customer, in the split-second decision no manual anticipated. With every such moment comes an opportunity to remember.
Who am I?
Why am I here?
What am I naturally equipped to do?
What am I here to contribute?
Remembering moves us closer to who we have always been.
The Creative Vortex
Within each of us is a creative vortex. A place where intuition, imagination, experience, natural ability and possibility meet.
We enter it when we stop looking exclusively outside ourselves for direction and begin listening to what we already know.
An idea arrives. Something feels unmistakably right. A skill carried for years reveals a larger purpose. An unrelated experience becomes useful. A path appears.
One step leads to another, and with each step, another layer is remembered.
–CG Excellence
The process may feel like discovery.
Often, discovery is recognition.
I know this.
I can do this.
This belongs to me.
The Treasure Chest
Every frontline leader carries a treasure chest of gifts, abilities and ways of perceiving.
Some are obvious early on.
Others seem to wait for experience, confidence, the right environment, or someone to recognize their value.
CG Excellence Training opens the chest: giving language to abilities used instinctively, strengthening skills that were present yet underdeveloped, and creating room to practice, apply and trust what is already known.
Capability grows. So does recognition.
The person in the mirror begins to see themselves in a more confident light.
The CG Excellence Remembering Principle
Development includes the recognition, activation, strengthening and application of capability already present.
Recognize → Access → Strengthen → Apply
Recognize your natural abilities.
Access them consciously.
Strengthen them through learning, reflection and practice.
Apply them through service, leadership and the work in front of you.
The more deliberately we access our inner strength, the more available it becomes and the greater our capacity to use it when it matters most.
The Behavioral Overlay
Over time, we accumulate behavioral overlays—learned responses, protective patterns and beliefs shaped by experience.
Some origins are easy to trace. Others are less apparent. Over time, these patterns can become so familiar that we mistake them for identity.
A naturally expressive person learns to become quiet.
An intuitive person learns to distrust what they sense.
A creative thinker learns to seek permission.
A capable leader learns to wait to be chosen.
The attribute remains. What changes is our access.
Remembering invites us to look beneath these layers and recognize what has been there all along.
Knowing Thyself
There is tremendous power in knowing what we bring to every shift, every interaction, every decision.
Knowing what energizes our minds. How we respond when circumstances change without notice. When intuition is speaking. What we contribute that no policy or procedure can replicate.
This self-knowledge matters most on the frontline, where interactions cannot be scripted and circumstances cannot be predicted.
When we know our capabilities, we can reach for creativity, resourcefulness, empathy, experience, intuition and ingenuity.
Approval as the Compass
From an early age, we learn to look outward for signals: approval, acceptance, recognition, permission. We learn what is expected of us and, sometimes without realizing it, build ourselves around those expectations.
The people whose approval we seek are living their own lives, shaped by their own experiences, abilities and expectations.
They cannot know our path for us.
There may come a time when the life we are living and the life we know within ourselves begin to feel different.
That feeling deserves our attention.
When we trust that internal compass, we begin creating from a place of alignment.
That, too, is remembering.
From Knowing to Contribution
Remembering is also an outward journey.
What we remember about ourselves needs to be expressed, shaping how we serve, solve, lead, build, connect and contribute.
Our inner knowing becomes capability.
Capability becomes expression.
Expression creates value.
And value, shared well, becomes contribution.
A natural ability to connect can become extraordinary service.
Experience can become insight shared with a teammate.
Creativity can become a better solution for a customer.
Intuition can prompt a question others have not considered.
Resourcefulness can turn an obstacle into possibility.
One leader's capability can become something of value to a team, an organization, a community or someone they may never know they influenced.
The Architecture of Now
We can spend a great deal of time thinking of our lives as something waiting to be constructed someday.
Yet the architecture is already unfolding in the decisions we make, the abilities we strengthen, the work we contribute, the way we serve others.
At CG Excellence Training™, we believe development opens the door to the treasure chest of capability, creativity and natural ability within every frontline servant leader.
The path forward often begins with remembering.
Seek not to be chosen.
Choose thyself.

Observe
Marcus Aurelius, while leading the Roman Empire, returned to presence by remembering he had power over his mind, not over external events.
Becoming the Witness of Your Own Life
Most people live inside their patterns without ever truly seeing them. They move through their days on autopilot, reacting, responding, repeating, rarely pausing long enough to notice how they are moving through their own life.
Cultivating awareness is the practice of stepping just far enough back from yourself to see clearly. When you begin paying attention to your own behavior, actions, temperament, habits, emotional loops, and energetic responses, you are no longer ruled by them. You begin to understand them. And understanding creates choice.
This is a practical discipline. Noticing reveals the habits that quietly shape your outcomes, the emotional triggers that pull you off center, and the behaviors that stall or move you forward. It also brings into focus the subtle ways you squander your most valuable resources, time, attention, energy, focus., through unconscious patterns, overextension, avoidance, and misalignment.
The Personal Witness Practice
Becoming your own witness means creating a daily relationship with your inner data. This can be written or recorded. It does not need to be polished, just honest. Each day, capture what you notice:
How you showed up
What pulled at your energy
What strengthened it
Where you acted in alignment
Where you didn’t
What felt expansive or constrictive
Over time, values become clearer. Your mission stops feeling abstract. Purpose becomes something you practice.
Looking at Your Life Frame by Frame
You are no longer trapped inside the moment. You are the one who sees it. -CG Excellence
Think of the viewers we held as children, the ones with the circular reel of images. Each click revealed a single frozen moment. You were not inside the scene. You were looking at it. Mindful attention allows you to relate to your own life in the same way, frame by frame. Instead of being emotionally entangled, you are holding it, examining it, learning from it, and moving forward with greater understanding.
Finding the Space Between Stimulus and Response
Stephen Covey described the pause between what happens to us and how we respond as our greatest human freedom. That pause does not appear automatically. It becomes visible through conscious awareness. Without it, we react from habit. With it, we pause. And in that pause, identity is shaped. You are not your reaction. You are the one who can see the reaction.
Marcus Aurelius practiced this form of inner clarity in real time. Even while leading an empire, he returned to presence by remembering he had power over his mind, not over external events.
Emotional Regulation: The Moment Awareness Becomes Power
The space between stimulus and response is filled with emotion. A surge of frustration, a tightening in the chest, the impulse to defend or withdraw. Most people lose their freedom here from not knowing how to regulate their internal state. Noticing allows you to see what you are feeling. Emotional regulation allows you to remain who you are while you are feeling it.
This is self-leadership in real time.
When you regulate your emotional state:
Clarity is maintained.
You standards stay in tact.
Alignment is preserved.
Your response becomes intentional instead of automatic. The same mastery Marcus Aurelius practiced, the refusal to let emotion take the seat of command.
Stepping Into the Seat of Awareness
Michael Singer writes: “You are not the voice in your head. You are the one who hears it.” When you can hear your thoughts rather than be carried by them, you move from the seat of reaction to the seat of awareness. From this place: clarity grows, emotional steadiness grows, self-trust grows. You begin to know yourself intimately.
The Physiology of Noticing
Most of our day is lived in fast, active mental states, thinking, solving, reacting, planning. In this state, the mind is loud. Mindful presence can be difficult, however, when you enter quieter states - reflection, journaling, stillness, walking, prayer, deep focus, or early morning awareness - the mental noise softens. You are no longer inside the storm. You are watching it.
Obseration and the study on oneself is one of the most life-changing decisions you can make. When triggers are discovered - the reason for the reaction, what is being protected and the repeated behaviors, life on autopilot stops. Self-awareness is freedom.
The Power of Now
Noticing anchors you in the present moment. The present moment is the only place choice exists. Not yesterday. Not tomorrow. Now. A quiet and clarifying question begins to surface: What am I doing right now that aligns with who I am here to be? Every meaningful life is built in these moments. Alignment is not a grand declaration. It is a series of small, conscious decisions made in ordinary time. Over time, those choices compound, shaping your behavior and your identity. Awareness is the path back to your source and your power.
As you begin paying attention to yourself, you will notice habits and reactions you do not love.
Remember: we all carry pure-hearted energy. Beneath the patterns, beneath the loops, beneath the learned behaviors, there is a part of you that is steady, sincere, and well-intentioned. Awareness is about uncovering who you have always been underneath the noise. The more you notice without judgment, the more you reconnect with that part of yourself. From there, change feels natural.
An Invitation
Today, begin the practice. At the end of your day, take five quiet minutes and become the witness of your own life. Notice:
Where your energy went
What strengthened you
What drained you
Where you acted in alignment
Where you reacted on autopilot
Where your time and attention were invested wisely
Where they were quietly squandered
Once you can see clearly, regulating your emotions becomes natural, choosing differently becomes natural, and alignment becomes your way of being.
Begin noticing.

The Human Void
Filling the void is about finally walking through the doorway of the self you were always meant to inhabit. Discover how loneliness signals misalignment and how to reclaim your presence from within
Filling the void is about finally walking through the doorway of the self you were always meant to inhabit.

Dedication
This piece is dedicated to RadioBob, whose commitment to visibility, upliftment, and community connection has quietly supported thousands of individuals navigating their own moments of emptiness, transition, and longing.
Your work is a living reminder that loneliness is eased not by noise, but by presence. Through commercial-free music, thoughtful interviews, philosophy, and life tips woven between the notes, you offer tools that reach people where they need it most, gently, without instruction, planting seeds that grow in their own timing.
Your mission to leave people, places, and things a little better than you found them reflects the very heart of this blog. The Human Void honors the spaces we all carry inside, and your platform stands as one of the quiet lights helping others find their way back to themselves.
Self-Attunement
Loneliness is part of the human condition. It shows up in the quiet moments between our roles, in the pauses of our relationships, and in the spaces where we outgrow the old version of ourselves and have not yet fully stepped into the new one. Most people experience loneliness as a signal that something is missing out there; companionship, validation, connection or recognition.
Loneliness is rarely a shortage of people.
Real loneliness forms when the distance between who you are and how you are living becomes too wide to ignore. The void is created by the absence of your own presence, voice, energy, and truth. This is the space only you can fill.
Thich Nhat Hanh often taught that "the longest journey we will ever take is the one from the mind back to the body." That return, back to breath, back to truth, back to presence, is where loneliness begins to dissolve, because you are finally meeting yourself again.
Misalignment Creates the Void
When you're misaligned, you move through life performing versions of yourself, versions shaped by expectations, survival strategies, or outdated identities. Performance is isolating. You can be surrounded by people and still feel invisible because the version of you they respond to isn't the one who lives inside you.
This is why so many people ask: "Why do I feel lonely even around people?"
The answer lies in emotional misalignment. You are not lonely because you lack connection. You are lonely because you've disconnected from yourself.
Loneliness softens when your choices begin to match your internal compass. You stop abandoning your voice. You stop negotiating your needs. You stop outsourcing your direction. Presence returns, and with it comes a grounded sense of belonging that doesn't depend on someone else to activate it.
Brianna Wiest writes that "your true self is not waiting to be found—it's waiting to be remembered." Alignment is remembering. Misalignment is forgetting. The void is the space in between.
Emotional Alignment
The path out of loneliness is emotional alignment.
Through these small and consistent acts, the reconnection with yourself is seamless:
Listening without judgment
Making a decision that honors your actual needs
Speaking a truth you've been suppressing
Creating something without worrying how it will be received
You will begin moving toward relationships, environments, and commitments that meet you where you already are.
When you fill your own void, you become self-anchored. You become easier to know because you're no longer fragmented internally. People connect with you more deeply because they're finally connecting with the real you.
The void is filled when you return to your center.
From that place, connection becomes richer, calmer, and more purposeful, because it reflects your alignment.
Closing the distance between your internal world and the life you're actually living is attunement.
CG Excellence Reflection
The void is only an illusion.
You were born with everything you will ever need and want. The emptiness you feel is evidence of forgetting that you are already enough. When you decide to reconnect with your true self, the void becomes a doorway, a doorway that has been open to you all along.
What once felt hollow becomes the threshold of your becoming. The loneliness you experienced was a signal that you were standing at the entrance of your next chapter, waiting to step through.
Filling the void is about finally walking through the doorway of the self you were always meant to inhabit.
