Perception

Exceptional service begins with attunement. Through attention, empathy and discernment, service professionals connect, interpret and elevate the experience.

Perception turns attention into an experience that fits. - CG Excellence

Attune to Elevate the Experience

I began my career managing a high-end shoe salon in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Finding the right fit involved size, purpose, personal style and the feeling a customer hoped to carry into an occasion. I learned to notice the styles drawing someone’s eye, a moment of hesitation and a change in expression. Each signal offered insight before words arrived.

The right shoe could create comfort, confidence and a sense of being understood. A recommendation became meaningful when the selection reflected the individual.

The lesson has remained with me throughout my career: seeing the individual clearly gives us the insight to shape an experience suited to the person receiving service.

Servant leaders, the practice of perception begins with you.

Perception shapes service before an action occurs or a word is spoken. It influences the details a customer notices, the meaning assigned and the impression carried forward. Two people can receive identical information and carry away distinctly different impressions. Each interpretation grows from an individual frame of reference.

Understanding Which Shoes Will Fit

Service professionals are often encouraged to walk in the customer’s shoes. The familiar guidance invites us to expand our point of view and consider an experience through another person’s eyes.

A deeper practice begins with understanding which shoes will fit.

Exceptional service anticipates the individual before determining the approach. Perceptive professionals consider the customer’s current understanding, immediate priorities and preferred form of communication.

Psychologist Carl Rogers described empathy through accurate perception of another person’s internal frame of reference: the feelings, meanings and experiences shaping an individual’s understanding of the world.

Applied to service, Rogers’s work invites curiosity and care. Three questions guide the process:

  1. Where could added context create clarity?

  2. Which concerns may be quietly shaping the moment?

  3. Which approach will support confidence and understanding?

Perception moves empathy from intention into a disciplined service capability.

How Will the Message Land?

Thoughtful delivery aligns language with the person, timing with the moment and tone with the circumstances.

Perceptive professionals choose words a customer can absorb, understand and retain. They recognize moments suited to detail, simplicity, reflection or response.

The way a message lands becomes part of the service experience. Every message carries information and an emotional impression. Perceptive service shapes both.

Service as an Act of Discernment

Perception joins observation with empathy, anticipation and judgment. Perceptive professionals anticipate questions and recognize the emotional current surrounding a practical need.

Before moving forward, they consider:

  • Will the message feel clear?

  • Will the person feel guided and understood?

  • Will the essential information remain memorable?

  • Will the experience honor the person making the request?

Philosopher Iris Murdoch described attention as “a just and loving gaze directed upon an individual reality.” Her words illuminate the moral significance of genuine attention.

Within service, attentive presence becomes visible through listening, observation and thoughtful adjustment. Hesitation, urgency and quiet concern become meaningful signals, guiding language, pace and delivery.

Consistency means extending an equal degree of care to every person and expressing care in a form suited to each individual.

Perception as an Organizational Capability

Customer interpretation influences trust, comprehension, confidence, loyalty and reputation. Timing, tone, explanation, awareness and judgment shape the customer experience alongside operational execution.

Leaders develop perceptive service through reflection, coaching and discussion of real interactions. Over time, perception becomes a practiced organizational capability rather than an individual instinct.

Four practices support the process:

  1. Pause before delivering information. Consider the customer’s understanding, priorities and preferred level of detail.

  2. Match delivery to the person. Adjust pace, language, tone and explanation according to the individual and the moment.

  3. Listen beneath the words. Treat vocal tone, facial expression and body language as meaningful information.

  4. Debrief the experience. Explore the emotional and practical impact of the interaction alongside task completion.

Perception transforms service into an experience shaped with intention.

Walking in the customer’s shoes deepens empathy.

Delivering the shoes suited to the customer brings empathy into action.

Remembering

Remembering explores intuition, self-awareness and the natural abilities within servant leaders and what becomes possible when those capabilities are recognized, strengthened and activated.

Seek not to be chosen.

Choose thyself.

Personal Note on Remembering

For me, remembering began as a subtle voice. With each month and each year, it grew louder until I knew it was time to pay attention.

Meditation and exploration created the space for that knowing to emerge. Ideas became words. Experience found new purpose. Abilities I had carried throughout my life began connecting in ways I had not seen before.

The expression continues to evolve as life unfolds.

As my awareness expanded, so did my sense of what was possible. I began to experience intuition, creativity and knowing as part of something vast. Insight that became available when I became still enough to listen.

There are lessons we learn.

And there is wisdom we remember.

Remembering is a knowing.

The recognition that something within us has been there all along: an instinct, an ability, a way of reading a room, a sense of direction that may not require explanation.

For the frontline servant leader, this recognition can show up mid-shift, in a difficult conversation with a customer, in the split-second decision no manual anticipated. With every such moment comes an opportunity to remember.

Who am I?

Why am I here?

What am I naturally equipped to do?

What am I here to contribute?

Remembering moves us closer to who we have always been.

The Creative Vortex

Within each of us is a creative vortex. A place where intuition, imagination, experience, natural ability and possibility meet.

We enter it when we stop looking exclusively outside ourselves for direction and begin listening to what we already know.

An idea arrives. Something feels unmistakably right. A skill carried for years reveals a larger purpose. An unrelated experience becomes useful. A path appears.

One step leads to another, and with each step, another layer is remembered.

–CG Excellence

The process may feel like discovery.

Often, discovery is recognition.

I know this.

I can do this.

This belongs to me.

The Treasure Chest

Every frontline leader carries a treasure chest of gifts, abilities and ways of perceiving.

Some are obvious early on.

Others seem to wait for experience, confidence, the right environment, or someone to recognize their value.

CG Excellence Training opens the chest: giving language to abilities used instinctively, strengthening skills that were present yet underdeveloped, and creating room to practice, apply and trust what is already known.

Capability grows. So does recognition.

The person in the mirror begins to see themselves in a more confident light.

The CG Excellence Remembering Principle

Development includes the recognition, activation, strengthening and application of capability already present.

Recognize → Access → Strengthen → Apply

Recognize your natural abilities.

Access them consciously.

Strengthen them through learning, reflection and practice.

Apply them through service, leadership and the work in front of you.

The more deliberately we access our inner strength, the more available it becomes and the greater our capacity to use it when it matters most.

The Behavioral Overlay

Over time, we accumulate behavioral overlays—learned responses, protective patterns and beliefs shaped by experience.

Some origins are easy to trace. Others are less apparent. Over time, these patterns can become so familiar that we mistake them for identity.

A naturally expressive person learns to become quiet.
An intuitive person learns to distrust what they sense.
A creative thinker learns to seek permission.
A capable leader learns to wait to be chosen.

The attribute remains. What changes is our access.

Remembering invites us to look beneath these layers and recognize what has been there all along.

Knowing Thyself

There is tremendous power in knowing what we bring to every shift, every interaction, every decision.

Knowing what energizes our minds. How we respond when circumstances change without notice. When intuition is speaking. What we contribute that no policy or procedure can replicate.

This self-knowledge matters most on the frontline, where interactions cannot be scripted and circumstances cannot be predicted.

When we know our capabilities, we can reach for creativity, resourcefulness, empathy, experience, intuition and ingenuity.

Approval as the Compass

From an early age, we learn to look outward for signals: approval, acceptance, recognition, permission. We learn what is expected of us and, sometimes without realizing it, build ourselves around those expectations.

The people whose approval we seek are living their own lives, shaped by their own experiences, abilities and expectations.

They cannot know our path for us.

There may come a time when the life we are living and the life we know within ourselves begin to feel different.

That feeling deserves our attention.

When we trust that internal compass, we begin creating from a place of alignment.

That, too, is remembering.

From Knowing to Contribution

Remembering is also an outward journey.

What we remember about ourselves needs to be expressed, shaping how we serve, solve, lead, build, connect and contribute.

Our inner knowing becomes capability.

Capability becomes expression.

Expression creates value.

And value, shared well, becomes contribution.

  • A natural ability to connect can become extraordinary service.

  • Experience can become insight shared with a teammate.

  • Creativity can become a better solution for a customer.

  • Intuition can prompt a question others have not considered.

  • Resourcefulness can turn an obstacle into possibility.

One leader's capability can become something of value to a team, an organization, a community or someone they may never know they influenced.

The Architecture of Now

We can spend a great deal of time thinking of our lives as something waiting to be constructed someday.

Yet the architecture is already unfolding in the decisions we make, the abilities we strengthen, the work we contribute, the way we serve others.

At CG Excellence Training™, we believe development opens the door to the treasure chest of capability, creativity and natural ability within every frontline servant leader.

The path forward often begins with remembering.

Seek not to be chosen.

Choose thyself.
